The CRT DAC signals should be routed with a nominal 37.5- trace impedance up to
the first 150- parallel termination-resistor. This 150- resistor should also be placed
as close to the PCH as possible. The routing from the first to the second, 150-
termination-resistor, that is, the majority of the RGB routing, should be done with a
trace impedance of 50 . Signals have to be routed on the same layer either on
microstrip or stripline. The short trace between the second resistor and connector
should be as narrow as possible and should ideally have a trace impedance of 75 , but
at least a trace impedance of 50 is recommended with minimum trace width.
CRT_IRTN provides the return current path to the CRT DAC signals. This should be
routed out and tied directly to the motherboard ground plane.
ESD diodes are required for each CRT DAC output. The diodes should connect between
the 3.3-V power plane (from the regulator) and ground. These diodes should have a
low C rating (~5 pF max) and a small leakage current (~10 µA at 120 °C). The diodes
should be placed to keep the inductance of the 3.3-V power-rail connection as low as
possible. These diodes should be placed between the analog switch and the VGA
connector, preferably near the respective VGA connector. In addition, one decoupling
capacitor, C1 = 0.1 µF, should be placed in close proximity and across the ESD diodes
to reduce noise on the 3.3-V rail.
To support a docking station, the CRT DAC signals need to be routed to the VGA
connector and docking connector from an analog switch. The analog switch for the DAC
outputs should exhibit an on-resistance of 4 or less, a capacitance of 6 pF or less
(typical), and support 100 mA of continuous current.
For the docking station, it is essential that the 150- termination-resistor (between the
analog switch and the VGA connector) be placed as close as possible to the VGA
connector on the docking station and not near the docking connector. Therefore, this
termination-resistor along with the video filter should be placed on the docking station
and not the motherboard.
